About the center

Bornholm Yoga and Retreat Center  is nestled in the countryside on the north coast of Bornholm, near the traditional fishing village of “Gudhjem” (translation:  gods-home) (See Map At The Bottom Of The Page)

05062009003

We hold weekly classes, workshops and retreats.

Our centre is housed in buildings from the 1850’s, arranged around a courtyard with gardens stretching back towards the lake, forest and open fields in one direction;  and in the other direction panoramic views over the Baltic sea.

Within a radius of few kilometers you will find wild nature, sea, forest, water fall, café, museums, handicrafts, art galleries, swimming pool, and village.

The forest begins 20 steps from the property and the sea is only  1½ kilometers away, down a small very quiet road. From here you can continue right on a beautiful costal track to Gudhjem (aprox. 2 km), or you can go left on the costal track to “Døndale” water fall and Bornholm art museum (aprox 4 km) stopping for a break in a cosy little café jutting right out into the sea. The big forest area “Rø Plantage”, is good for both hiking and mountain biking (aprox 2 km inland)

Bornholm

Steep, dramatic rocky shores, woods, moors, bogs, sand dunes, almost primeval forests, rift valleys, waterfalls, stream valleys  and gorgeous sandy beaches. The Bornholm countryside is just as dramatic as the forces that created it. The island was formed in an inferno 30 kilometers below the earth’s surface in a mountain range 1,400 million years ago. It was only about 10,000 years ago that it began to settle, revealing an island possessing a special quiet magic.

The dramatic effects of the ice ages can be seen throughout the island. The lofty, rocky shores and the countless rift valleys transecting the countryside from Hammerkunden to Svaneke are reminders of the ravages of successive ice ages.

The combination of rocks, sun and sea has created an environment of unique fauna- graceful trees and wild fruit. The island is flocked with birds, and animals such as deer and hares wander wild.

History has left many offerings to the power of the island, such as stone circles, rune inscribed rocks and naturally formed caves.

Dotted with smokehouses, round churches, castles, windmills and ochre half timbered homes, the island maintains a quiet, traditional way of life whilst also nurturing a forward looking creative community.

Yoga

The regular yoga teacher is Solveig Egebjerg, who has a background in dance, martial arts (ki aikido), Alexander technique, massage, voice healing, energy work and meditation.  Over many years she has explored various yoga forms. For some years she studied with Sharat in the Himalyayan Iyengar yoga Center, who is teaching with a special focus on the feet and their importance for the alignment of the whole body. This led her to a practice inspired by Vanda Scaravelli, which works from the inside out, focusing on gravity, the breath and the spine. A form which is subtle and calls for intuitive and fluid teaching. Vanda is no more alive, but her wisdom is carried on by her main student Diane Long, who is now Solveig’s main teacher.
